Kingdom Hearts χ is gear up in a world called Daybreak Town in the distant by, prior to the other games in the serial. The game begins earlier the legendary Keyblade State of war, a conflict sparked due to disputes between Keyblade wielders over the light that created the world, triggering a calamity that reshaped the world into that seen in the residuum of the Kingdom Hearts series.[vii] [9] Prior to the war, a precognizant Keyblade Master known merely every bit the Chief of Masters bestows a Book of Prophecies to v of his six apprentices, the Foretellers, before disappearing. The book has the power to manifest objects and people from the future, and contains an account of time to come events, from which the v Foretellers learn of a prophecy foretelling the world's destruction. To prevent this, the Foretellers use their books to manifest future worlds and defeat the Heartless infesting them to assemble pieces of light, called Lux. The player graphic symbol, a newly awakened Keyblade wielder, chooses to support 1 of the Unions and works to ensure the chosen faction'due south supremacy.[6] [10] The future worlds created by the Volume of Prophecies include several worlds introduced in previous series entries, including Dwarf Woodlands (based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs); Agrabah (Aladdin); Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland); Olympus Coliseum (Hercules); and Animal's Castle (Beauty and the Animal).

Ava offers the same invitation to Skuld and the player; Skuld accepts, but the role player is uncertain. As time passes, other wielders accuse one another of stealing Lux, and the Foretellers – suspecting 1 among themselves to exist a traitor – begin rallying more than wielders to their Unions to bolster their forces for the war.

Ava tracks down the Master'due south sixth apprentice, Luxu, who vanished to watch the state of war unfold as per the Master's instructions; when Luxu reveals the true nature of the traitor, Ava attacks him, starting the war as prophesied. Skuld returns to the Dandelions while the actor participates in the war alone, battling for as long as they can before collapsing in burnout. The Master entrusts Luxu with his Keyblade and a black box, which he instructs him to never open, revealing his plan to terminate a greater state of war confronting 13 willful embodiments of darkness by using his apprentices and the new Union leaders as vessels to contain them. The Master plans to travel into the futurity and escape into a fictional world with Luxu'due south assist.

After the war, the Dandelions reside in a data simulation of Daybreak Boondocks, with all but the Matrimony leaders made to forget what had happened. Lauriam investigates Strelitzia'south disappearance, aided past his fellow party member Elrena, earlier confronting Maleficent in the tower. Maleficent defeats Lauriam and escapes, but the lifeboat is damaged during the fight. Upon returning to the existent world, the willful darkness instructs Maleficent to use some other pod to return to the future.[d] Meanwhile, a malfunction causes the datascape to display afterimages of events from earlier the Keyblade State of war. While searching the Book of Prophecies for a solution, Encephalon finds the Master'southward list and discovers that Ventus is non i of the intended Union leaders. Suspecting that Ventus had replaced Strelitzia, the grouping learns that a willful darkness possessed Ventus and killed Strelitzia to sow discord between the leaders.

The willful darkness within Ventus emerges and reveals that using the lifeboat triggers a failsafe meant to shut the datascape down with the darkness trapped inside, but due to Maleficent'south earlier utilise, the process has already begun. Ventus absorbs and binds the darkness within himself to end information technology from attacking. Brain, Lauriam, Ventus, and Elrena use the remaining pods to return to the real world; Ephemer, Skuld and the player stay behind and protect the Dandelions until they can all be rescued. They are confronted past iv willful darknesses, but the thespian pretends to be possessed by i of them and attacks Ephemer and Skuld, who are forced to seal the player along the other darknesses in the datascape.

In the existent world, a willful darkness encounters Luxu, who places a white-cloaked figure into the lifeboat and sends it into the hereafter. Later, the escaped Keyblade wielders use the pods to achieve the hereafter, only Brain stays behind and meets Luxu; he is subsequently seen carrying the Chief's keyblade and box. Daybreak Boondocks is destroyed, and the remaining Dandelions' Chirithies become Dream Eaters to protect their hearts; the player instead chooses to be reborn by merging their own heart with that of a newborn, Xehanort. Development [edit]

Kingdom Hearts χ was co-directed by Tetsuya Nomura, i of the serial' creators, and Tatsuya Kando, who had previously directed Nintendo DS game The World Ends with You.[10] The game's music was equanimous by Yoko Shimomura, a regular contributor to the series' music.[12] The game was co-developed by Foursquare Enix and Japanese studio Success Corporation.[xiii] [fourteen] Square Enix originally handled the planning and design itself, merely due to their developers' inexperience with creating browser games, development was transferred to the Success Corporation, who were familiar with the procedure. Despite multiplayer elements existence included, the game was "fundamentally single-thespian", as with virtually other entries in the series.[fourteen] Chirithy, the player characters' companion, was designed around the concept of a supportive yet unobtrusive guide.[15] Nomura based the graphic symbol's design on the Scottish Fold domestic cat.[15]

Due to difficulties that arose adapting the core Kingdom Hearts experience into a browser game, the presentation was designed similar style of fantasy classics of the locations encountered previously past serial protagonists Sora and Riku. And because the game was to be played with a mouse instead of a game controller, the gameplay focus became simple controls and "flashy" battles.[vi] [sixteen] In an interview, Nomura stated that the work on developing Kingdom Hearts χ was paused for a fourth dimension then developers could work on Kingdom Hearts III. He too stated that at the fourth dimension they were exploring ways to let more fans of the serial to feel the game.[17] The stories of Kingdom Hearts χ and Kingdom Hearts III were both written at the same time, and thus share a strong connection.[17] Despite this strong link, it was described past Tetsuya Nomura equally a title where story was not the focus, and that its content was completely separate from the principal series, making it accessible for newcomers.[16] The game'due south title refers to the χ-blade (chi-bract), the original Keyblade and a weapon central to the Kingdom Hearts storyline.[6]

The original program was to make the game a simpler version of its browser counterpart, but with the increasing specs of mobile devices, the workload increased, contributing to the halt to development. As mobile devices employ a different command set-up to web browsers, Unchained could not work merely equally a port of Kingdom Hearts χ. Its title "Unchained" signified the gameplay and story of Kingdom Hearts χ being released into a mobile format. Ane of the changes instituted during the games mobile remake was to make the gameplay more "casual" than Kingdom Hearts χ, with battles existence shorter and potentially easier.[seven]

In January 2020, a new mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Dark Route was revealed,[xx] existence developed by the same squad working on Union χ.[21] It was subsequently antiseptic that Dark Road would exist a standalone game accessed inside Union χ and that the app would be rebranded as Kingdom Hearts Union χ Dark Road upon Night Road 's release.
